Translation

Treats shaoyin disease with a sunken pulse, cold hands and feet and aching bones and joints; and treats a bland mouth with aversion to cold in the back. Atractylodes, 4 don; poria and peony, 3 don each; blast-fried aconite and ginseng, 2 don each. Cut up, divide into two packets and decoct in water, taken warm. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two indications and the second is the better one: 口中和 — a bland mouth, meaning no bitter or dry taste and therefore no heat anywhere — together with aversion to cold felt specifically in the back. That pairing is the Shanghanlun's way of establishing that a patient's chill is constitutional rather than febrile, and it is a genuinely useful check. Atractylodes leads at four don with poria behind it, which makes this a damp-draining formula as much as a warming one, suited to the aching cold-and-heavy limb rather than to collapse. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
