Hornet's Nest Powder

Bongbang-san

한글 봉방산  ·  Pinyin Feng Fang San

蜂房散

The leaf writes 灸 where the sense is 炙, roasted; the transcription's form is kept, as the corpus does for 灸/炙 throughout. 臘猪脂, the lard the powder is worked up with at the moment of dressing, is a vehicle and is kept in the source text only. The page boundary [040a] falls inside this leaf, between 臘猪脂調 and 付之, and carries no collation note of its own.

Translation

Treats a fistulous sore of many years. Hornet's nest, roasted to yellow, 7 don 5 fun; pangolin scale roasted until scorched and fossil bone, 2 don 5 fun each; a little musk. Powder the above and work it up with the twelfth-month lard of a pig to apply. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of the three dressings the 疳瘻 section offers under 生肌 — making flesh grow — alongside 平肌散 and 人牙散, and the one built on burnt animal material rather than bone ash. Hornet's nest carries three quarters of the weight, with pangolin scale and fossil bone behind it and a trace of musk. It is the same handful of drugs as the 直指's own 穿山甲散 for 癰疽, turned from a powder swallowed in wine into a powder laid on the sore. What it would have done is what any dry absorbent dressing does: take up discharge and leave a crust over the mouth of the tract. Closing the mouth of a sinus is not the same as healing it, and the chapter knows this better than the formula does — 凡癕疽諸發苟有宿膿朽骨停蓄其間皆爲之漏, any sore with retained pus or dead bone lodged in it becomes a fistula. While that sits at the bottom, a dressing at the top cannot close it. **Contains pangolin scale, whose trade is prohibited under CITES Appendix I, and musk, a CITES-protected material. It is applied to an open sinus in rendered pig fat, which is not sterile. This must not be prepared.** A sinus of many years needs imaging to find what is feeding it, cultures, and usually surgery to lay the tract open or take out the sequestrum — not a dressing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
