Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治酒疸. 半夏ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ白朮各一錢, 前胡ㆍ枳殼ㆍ大戟ㆍ甘草各七分, 黃芩ㆍ當歸ㆍ茵蔯各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三片, 水煎服. 《活人》

Translation

Treats alcohol jaundice. Pinellia, red poria and white atractylodes 1 don each; peucedanum, bitter orange, euphorbia and licorice 7 pun each; scutellaria, angelica and virgate wormwood 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Hwarinseo 活人 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The name states the design — half warm, half hot — and the composition holds two temperatures together: pinellia, white atractylodes and ginger warming, scutellaria and virgate wormwood cooling. Euphorbia at 7 pun is the surprise, and it is there for the drinker's retained rheum rather than for the jaundice. **Contains euphorbia, a toxic drastic purgative.
