한글 백룡고  ·  Pinyin Bai Long Gao

白龍膏

A new registration: no 白龍膏 stood in the formula list before, and nothing in the corpus cross-references this name, so there is no shell to fill and no same-name entry to distinguish it from. 柳白皮, willow bark, has no identifier in the herb list — 柳枝梢, the twig tip, is a different part — and is left out of the ingredients. 杏仁油 is registered under the kernel it is pressed from, following the way 海松子油 is handled in 臘享膏. 右七味 counts the seven drugs that are cut up and steeped, excluding the calomel, the frankincense, the lead carbonate, the wax and the oil; the count is internally consistent. ≪無則代香油≫ is a substance gloss, not a cross-reference, so it is printed in parentheses. 黄 is printed 黃, 桒 as 桑 and 㝎 as 定 by the usual normalisations; 白歛 keeps the transcription's form. A collation note 㝎 : 定(First Edition) sits two leaves on, inside the 爐灰膏 leaf, but the character it annotates is 㝎粉 in this leaf; it is a pure glyph variant already covered.

Translation

Baekmi, angelica dahurica, ampelopsis, astragalus, phytolacca root, willow bark and mulberry root bark, 1 nyang each; calomel 5 don (ground separately); frankincense 2 nyang (ground separately); lead carbonate and beeswax, 8 nyang each; apricot-kernel oil 1 geun (sesame oil if there is none). Cut up the seven drugs named above, steep them three days, then work and render them until the angelica dahurica has yellowed; remove the dregs, add the beeswax and the frankincense and let them melt, take it off the fire and strain it again, and when it has cooled a little put in the calomel and the lead carbonate, stirring quickly until it is cold. Store it, and spread it on crimson silk to lay on the place. It treats malignant sores of every kind, and a long-standing sore with toxic swelling. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The white plaster of the set, and the name is literal — every drug in the steeped portion begins with 白 or is pale, the base is set with lead carbonate rather than red lead, and the finished mass is white instead of the usual purple-black. That is the one plaster-maker's distinction here: 黃丹 is lead tetroxide and colours the oil dark, 定粉 is lead carbonate and keeps it light. Spreading it on 緋帛, crimson silk, was a presentation as much as a dressing. What it is built from is the cooling, drawing group — 白薇, 白歛, 商陸根, 桑白皮 — in an apricot-kernel oil base, with no aromatics and no blood-movers. It is a plaster for a sore that has gone on too long rather than for an acute one, and the indication 久瘡腫毒 says so. **Contains calomel (輕粉), which is mercury(I) chloride, and lead carbonate (定粉).** This chapter is where the calomel was made — 造輕粉法 at 5.3.33 is its manufacture — and the Bogam's own 諸瘡門 records the poisoning it causes in four separate sections. Both minerals go in after the fire is off, so neither is altered by heating; they are in the finished paste as they were weighed. The route that matters for an ointment is absorption through broken skin, and a long-standing open sore has lost the barrier that keeps metals out. Mercury and lead are cumulative poisons with no safe dose, and a dressing renewed on a chronic ulcer over weeks is the worst case. **This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
