Hundredfold Pill

Baekbae-hwan

한글 백배환  ·  Pinyin Bai Bei Wan

百倍丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered and bound with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 30–50 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted broth. **Note on modern practice: tiger bone (虎骨) is from a critically endangered species protected under CITES Appendix I; its trade is prohibited and contemporary practice substitutes dog bone (狗骨) or omits it. Pyrite is likewise not in common use. The formula is recorded as classical text.**

Translation

Treats Kidney vacuity pain of lumbus and thigh, and fracture injury and wrenching strain — it has a hundredfold effect. Dry-fried psoralea, wine-washed achyranthes, and butter-roasted turtle plastron, 1 nyang each; cistanche and tiger bone, 5 don each; momordica seed, frankincense, myrrh, and pyrite calcined and quenched in vinegar nine times, 2 don each. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 30–50 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted broth. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Yo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The name claims a hundredfold effect, and the composition explains the ambition: this is a bone formula, not a muscle one. Turtle plastron, tiger bone, and pyrite — shell, bone, and metal — sit beneath the usual eucommia-and-psoralea pairing, on the reasoning that what knits bone should itself be of bone. Pyrite in particular is the tradition's standing agent for fractures, and it appears again in the wrenching-strain formulas. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
