Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風痰嗽. 有一種咳嗽, 直至頓吐飮食痰物俱出盡, 方小定, 此乃肝木剋脾土, 風痰壅盛所致. 宜以<a href='/formulas/cheongju-baegwonja'>白元子</a>方作生料<span class='sochu'>方見風門</span>, 加木香ㆍ丁香ㆍ橘紅ㆍ天麻ㆍ全蝎ㆍ白殭蚕, 水煎和薑汁服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats wind phlegm cough. There is a kind of cough that goes on until the food and phlegm are all vomited up at once, and only then settles a little; this is liver wood restraining spleen earth, with wind phlegm filling and brimming. The White Pill formula<span class='sochu'>the formula is given in the Wind chapter</span> should be made up as raw material, with costus, cloves, tangerine peel, gastrodia, scorpion and silkworm added, decocted in water and taken mixed with ginger juice. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The description is the reason this entry is worth reading: a cough that will not stop until the patient has vomited everything, and only then eases. That is post-tussive vomiting, and it is a cardinal feature of pertussis, of severe asthma and of bronchiectasis. The Bogam reads it as the liver overriding the spleen, which is its way of saying that the cough is driving the stomach. **The base formula's arisaema and pinellia are toxic in the raw state, and here the instruction is explicitly to use them raw rather than as pills.
