Translation

Treats food accumulation, dead blood and phlegm-rheum formed into lumps, lying in both ribsides with pain, with rumbling in the abdomen, gnawing discomfort and dizziness. Coptis 1.5 nyang — half of it dry-fried with 5 don of evodia, the evodia then discarded, and half dry-fried with 5 don of alpinia, the alpinia then discarded; white mustard seed and radish seed (both stir-fried) 1.5 nyang each; gardenia, chuanxiong, sparganium, curcuma, peach kernel, cyperus, hawthorn flesh and medicated leaven 1 nyang each; green tangerine peel 5 don. Powder them, make pills with steamed cake the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty or sixty down with plain hot water. Also called Baekgae-hwan; now called Sojeok-hwan. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The coptis processing is the technique worth noting. The same nyang and a half is split in two, one half fried with evodia and the other with alpinia, and both partners are then thrown away. Evodia is acrid and hot and directs coptis toward the liver; alpinia is warm and aromatic and directs it toward the spleen. One medicinal is thereby sent to two places at once, and its bitter cold is tempered without adding anything to the finished pill. The three causes named in the indication — food accumulation, dead blood, phlegm-rheum — are exactly the three the chapter assigns to right, left and centre at 1.6, so this is the formula for a lump that will not be sorted into one of the three. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
