Translation

Treats phlegm fire of every kind and a hundred sorts of strange disease, and excels at regulating the spleen and stomach with marked effect. Coptis steeped in a decoction of licorice; licorice steeped in a decoction of coptis; trichosanthes seed steeped in a decoction of pinellia; pinellia steeped in a decoction of trichosanthes seed. Fry each until the liquid is gone, in equal parts. Cut up, take 5 don with 3 slices of ginger and decoct. Alternatively powder the four, boil lesser galangal for its juice to make a paste, form pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty down with plain hot water — this works even better. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two classical pairs — coptis with licorice, trichosanthes with pinellia — and each medicinal is steeped in a decoction of its own partner before use. The reciprocal soaking is the entire technique. Cold coptis takes on licorice's sweet moderation before it enters the body; pinellia's acrid dryness is tempered by trichosanthes and trichosanthes's slippery cold is warmed by pinellia. Four medicinals, but each arrives already carrying its counterweight. The claim to treat a hundred strange diseases is the standard classical shorthand for phlegm as a hidden cause, and should be read as a statement about scope of suspicion rather than efficacy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
