Translation

Treats cold phlegm in the spleen and stomach with retching counterflow, nausea, and no thought of food or drink. Large pinellia 4 nyang — sliced, steeped a day in a solution of 1 nyang powdered alum and drained, steeped another day in ginger juice, boiled until the liquid is gone, then dry-roasted and powdered for use; licorice (mix-fried) 2 nyang; red tangerine peel, amomum, medicated leaven (stir-fried) and tsaoko 1 nyang each; clove and round cardamom 5 don each. Grind to a fine powder and take 1 don at a time, steeped in ginger-and-salt decoction. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The 'new method' of the title is the pinellia processing, which takes two days and is described in more detail than the rest of the formula combined. Alum first, then ginger juice, then boiled to dryness — alum draws out the acrid irritant, ginger governs what remains. Around that sits a warm aromatic cabinet of clove, cardamom, tsaoko and amomum that reads more like a digestive formula than a phlegm formula, which fits the indication: the target here is the appetite that cold phlegm has shut down, not the phlegm alone. Taken as a powder in salted ginger broth, a don at a time. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
