Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治外感內傷, 頭痛ㆍ身熱. 白朮四錢, 桔梗二錢, 當歸ㆍ陳皮ㆍ枳殼ㆍ防風ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ厚朴ㆍ人參ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 葱白三莖, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats external contraction with internal damage, headache and fever. Atractylodes, 4 don; platycodon, 2 don; tangkuei, tangerine peel, bitter orange, saposhnikovia, white peony, magnolia bark, ginseng and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and three stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A striking dose structure: atractylodes at 4 don, platycodon at 2, and the remaining eight drugs at 5 fun apiece — the chief is eight times the others. That makes it a middle-burner formula wearing a surface formula's clothes, which is right for the pattern it names: the external contraction is the presenting complaint but the internal damage is why the patient is ill. Platycodon lifts and opens the chest, saposhnikovia handles the exterior, and bitter orange with magnolia bark relieves the fullness.
