Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

仙朮湯, 常服延年明目, 駐顔輕身不老. 蒼朮十九兩二錢ㆍ棗肉六升ㆍ杏仁二兩四錢ㆍ乾薑(炮) 五錢ㆍ甘草(灸) 五兩ㆍ白鹽(炒) 十兩. 右細末, 每二錢, 沸湯點服, 空心. 《局方》

Translation

Seonchul-tang: taken regularly it extends the years and brightens the eyes, arrests the face, lightens the body and keeps off age. Black atractylodes 19 nyang 2 don, jujube flesh 6 seung, apricot kernel 2 nyang 4 don, ginger 5 don blast-fried, licorice 5 nyang roasted, and white salt 10 nyang parched; powder them fine and take 2 don a dose infused in boiling water, on an empty stomach. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Sinhyeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one compounded formula among the Body chapter's simples, and the proportions are worth noticing: nearly a third of it by weight is salt and jujube, which makes it a savoury instant broth rather than a medicine — the sort of thing kept in a jar and stirred into hot water each morning. 十九兩二錢 is an oddly exact figure for a formula whose other weights are round, and it suggests a recipe scaled from a larger batch. The apricot kernel contains amygdalin, which releases cyanide on digestion, and at 2 nyang 4 don in the whole batch the per-dose amount is small; it is still the one ingredient to note. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
