散鬱湯

The passage carries no source annotation of its own. It sits among Hoechun formulas and shares their construction, so the attribution is inherited rather than stated; entered as Manbyeong Hoechun on that basis, following the precedent set for Sanchija-san in the Phlegm-Rheum chapter.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Named for food depression but containing no food-reducing medicinal at all — no hawthorn, no leaven, no barley sprout. What it has instead is white peony and gardenia, which soften the liver and drain depressed heat. The passage that closes this section makes the reasoning explicit: when depression is scattered, the upper burner moves, the lower duct opens, and the yin of grain and water enriches of itself. Treat the depression and the food moves; attacking the food is not always necessary. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
