Great Way Pill for Taking Refuge

Pinandaedo-hwan

한글 피난대도환  ·  Pinyin Bi Nan Da Dao Wan

避難大道丸

The collation note 採 : 揀 stands at the foot of 043b, inside the following 取水火法 leaf, but the character it annotates is in this leaf — 採去藥, pick out the drugs — and 採 does not occur in 取水火法 at all. The transcription's reading 採 is printed; the First Edition reads 揀, which carries the same sense of picking the drugs out of the pot.

Translation

Great Way Pill for Taking Refuge. Black soybeans, 1 seung, skins removed; dryopteris root and licorice, 1 nyang each; poria, atractylodes lancea and amomum, 5 don each. Cut and break them up, and with 5 jan of water boil them together with the beans over a slow fire until the water is wholly gone. Pick out the drugs, take the beans and pound them to a paste, make pills the size of a water-chestnut and seal them in a porcelain jar. Chew one pill and you may then eat sprouts and leaves as you please and be full the whole day; and though they be strange grasses and uncommon trees that you have never known, they will be without poison, sweet to the taste, and the same as a meal of rice. ○ Another method: black soybeans, 1 seung, and dryopteris root, 1 geun, finely cut, boiled together until the beans are cooked fragrant, turned over and over until all the remaining liquid is taken up; winnow out the dryopteris, keep only the black beans, and eat five to seven of them on an empty stomach each day. You may then eat grasses and trees without harm. Fish, meat, vegetables, fruit and hot soups are to be avoided. After some days you will no longer think of food. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A refugee's ration rather than a medicine, and the chapter files it under 辟糓不飢方, the methods for going without grain. Black soybeans are simmered with dryopteris root, licorice, poria, atractylodes and amomum until the pot is dry, so that the beans take up the whole decoction; one bean-paste pill is chewed and the eater then forages. The second method drops the aromatics and boils the beans with a whole geun of dryopteris alone. The claim is the interesting part: that after the pill, unknown plants will be harmless, sweet, and as filling as rice. Nothing in the formula can do this. Soybeans are nourishing in themselves — the pill is real food, a few hundred calories of bean paste — but no bean confers immunity to an unidentified plant, and foraging unknown herbage is how famines kill people who have survived the hunger. **Dryopteris root (貫衆) is not a food. Its filicin is toxic in quantity — gastrointestinal injury, and optic nerve damage in overdose, especially when taken with fat — and the second method boils a whole geun of it with the beans and then discards it. Neither method should be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
