貝母散

The chapter carries two formulas called 貝母散: this one, in the phlegm-panting section, which is only a cross-reference to 二母散 with a note on the timing, and a fuller one in the hot-cough section with apricot kernel, coltsfoot and mulberry root bark. They are registered separately.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治熱嗽及痰喘. 辰時服, 酉時可安. 卽上二母散也. 《得效》

Translation

Treats hot cough and phlegm panting. Taken at the hour of the dragon, it may be settled by the hour of the cockerel. That is, it is the Two Mothers Powder given above. — Sejong Jeungbo Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a formula but a note on timing: the same two-mother powder, taken in the morning, with the claim that the cough will have settled by evening. 辰時 is the double hour around eight in the morning and 酉時 the one around six in the evening, so what is being promised is relief within a day. **The underlying formula contains croton and must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
