Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治腎泄, 每於五更天明洞泄一次, 謂之晨泄. 五味子二兩, 吳茱萸五錢. 右幷炒香, 爲細末, 每二錢, 空心, 米飮調下. 《本事》

Translation

Treats kidney diarrhoea — a single cavernous stool every fifth watch as the sky lightens, which is called dawn diarrhoea. Schisandra, 2 nyang; evodia, 5 don. Stir-fry both until fragrant, grind fine, and take 2 don each time on an empty stomach stirred into rice water. — Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and the indication is one of the most precisely observed signs in the book: a single loose stool at daybreak, every day, and nothing wrong for the rest of it. Dawn diarrhoea is still a recognized clinical pattern — the early-morning urgency of irritable bowel syndrome, and of bile-acid diarrhoea — and the tradition's reading of it as the kidney's fire failing at the hour when yang should be rising is as good an explanation as it had. Schisandra is sour and binding, evodia warm and antisecretory, and in a four-to-one ratio this is a plausible little prescription. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
