Five Blessings Resolve Toxin Elixir

Obokhwadok-dan

한글 오복화독단  ·  Pinyin Wu Fu Hua Du Dan

五福化毒丹

A collation note, 沫 : 末 (First Edition), is printed inside this leaf at the foot of leaf 029b, between 玄參 一兩 and 桔梗 八錢. The character 沫 occurs nowhere in this leaf — the leaf's only 末 is the 右爲末 of the method, and the nearest 沫 anywhere in the transcription is 瀉靑白黃沫 in the 疳瀉 sub-section some twenty lines earlier. The note therefore annotates that passage and not this formula, and it has been left alone. The leaf writes 𤍠 for 熱 and 為 for 爲, both normalized.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A cooling, pus-draining elixir: scrophularia and platycodon over red poria and a saline purgative, with indigo, licorice and musk, and gold and silver leaf both milled in and used as the pill coat. The dosing instruction is the most careful in the section — one pill for a one-year-old, split into four — and it is still a quarter of an unmeasured pill. The indications are worth separating, because two of them are real and specific. Crops of boils in a wasted child are staphylococcal skin sepsis, and malnutrition is what lets them recur. Bleeding gums with foul breath and drooling in such a child is gingivostomatitis, and in this population it is the condition that runs on into 走馬牙疳, noma. And 雀目 is night blindness: vitamin A deficiency, the same disease the chapter treats correctly two sections later in 1.39 疳眼 with animal liver. Here the diagnosis is right and the remedy is not — there is no vitamin A in scrophularia, platycodon, indigo or millet-washing water, and the deficiency runs on through corneal ulceration to permanent blindness. Two 200,000 IU capsules now prevent that outright, for a few cents. The point made in full on 胡黃連丸 (`hohwangryeon-hwan`) applies here: this is not food, and the child's malnutrition is the disease. **Contains musk in a formula for an infant, and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere beyond a quarter of a pill. This must not be prepared.** **Contains musk — 麝香 — from a CITES Appendix I deer.** It cannot legally be traded, and the demand this tradition created is a direct cause of the musk deer's decline. The mirabilite is a saline purgative, which in a child with gan diarrhoea works against the one thing that would help — see the aloe statement on 蘆薈丸 (`nohoe-hwan`). The gold and silver leaf are metallically inert and the least of the problems here. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
