Plum Blossom Decoction

Maehwa-tang

한글 매화탕  ·  Pinyin Mei Hua Tang

梅花湯

Taken freely, like a beverage: the two ingredients are decocted in water and drunk at will. The name recalls the classical method of roasting glutinous grain until it bursts open like plum blossoms.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治三消渴, 飮水隨卽小便, 如神. 糯米(暫炒曬乾)ㆍ桑根白皮(厚者細剉) 各五錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎, 任意飮之.

Translation

Treats the three wasting-thirsts where water drunk passes at once as urine — divine in effect. Glutinous rice (briefly roasted and sun-dried) and mulberry root bark (thick pieces, finely cut), 5 don each. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water, and drink at will. (Donguibogam · Sogal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two ingredients against the chapter's gravest arithmetic — when water runs straight through, this pairs the grain that holds with the bark that clears, dosed not as medicine but as the day's drinking water. Divine, says the source, for exactly that reason. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
