Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治孕婦傷寒, 發大熱, 或發痘疹, 恐傷胎藏. 嫩卷荷葉一兩(焙)ㆍ蛤粉五錢. 右爲末, 每服二錢, 蜜水調下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats cold damage in a pregnant woman with high fever, or with pox and rash erupting, where there is fear of harming the womb. Tender rolled lotus leaf, 1 nyang, baked dry; clam shell powder, 5 don. Powder, and take 2 don per dose stirred into honey water. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs and no heat in either, which is the whole design: a high fever in pregnancy needs the heat brought down without anything that could move the womb, so the formula contains no purgative, no blood-mover and nothing acrid. The young rolled lotus leaf is cooling and lifting, the one classical drug specifically credited with holding a fetus in place; clam shell powder is salty and cold and drains heat downward through the urine, the gentlest available exit. Honey water as the vehicle.
