Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治三焦約, 大小便不通. 枳殼二兩, 陳皮一兩, 檳榔五錢, 木香二錢半, 黑牽牛子四兩(一半生用, 一半炒熟, 搗取頭末一兩半, 餘不用). 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 薑湯下三五十丸. 《河間》

Translation

Treats the three burners constricted, with neither stool nor urine passing. Bitter orange 2 nyang; tangerine peel 1 nyang; areca 5 don; costus 2 don 5 pun; black morning-glory seed 4 nyang, half raw and half fried, pounded and only the first sifting — 1 nyang 5 don — kept, the rest not used. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take thirty to fifty with ginger decoction. — Hagan 河間 (Donguibogam · Samcho)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Liu Wansu's pill for the burner that has shut both outlets — bitter orange and areca to press down, morning-glory seed to drive through. 頭末, the first sifting: only the finest powder that comes through the sieve first is used, which is the tradition's way of taking the potent fraction of a harsh seed. **Morning-glory seed (牽牛子) is a drastic purgative and is toxic in excess.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
