Revive Again Powder

Jaeso-san

한글 재소산  ·  Pinyin Zai Su San

再甦散

小猪尾血, the blood from a young pig's tail, has no entry in the herb dictionary and is left out of the ingredient list; it is named in the translation. 一橡斗 is an acorn cup used as a measure and carries no weight. The transcription writes 為, printed 爲 as the corpus prints it. The alternative name 再甦丹 stands at the head of the leaf and is printed in that position.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Clarified alum and stir-fried earthworm in equal parts, ground to a powder, 5 pun at a time taken down in freshly drawn water with about an acorn-cup of blood from a young pig's tail. The prose that sends for it says what it is for: 穢汚毒氣入內成黑陷 — the defiling toxic air has got inside and the pox has become black and sunken. **This is the second leaf of 1.84 禳法, the section on averting the pox by ritual, and it is the one that follows when the aversion has failed.** The section's logic is intact: the defilement is outside, it is kept outside by coriander and by the fumigant of 辟穢散, and when it gets in anyway something must be given to bring the child back. 再甦 means to revive, to come round a second time. It is set down here as what it is. What the three materials are. Alum is hydrated aluminium potassium sulfate, an astringent; 明白礬 is the clarified grade. The earthworm is a cooling drug in this tradition and is given stir-fried. The pig's tail blood is a sympathetic remedy and is the interesting item — the chapter's other recourse for the same indication, 猪尾膏, works on the same principle, that blood taken from the tail will draw a pox that has sunk out to the extremity of the body. 黑陷, black sinking, is haemorrhagic smallpox: bleeding into the pocks and into the skin, a flat dusky eruption that fails to raise. It killed very nearly everyone who had it, usually before the pustular stage. The chapter gives it more room than anything else in it, at 1.85.19, and that statement is not repeated here. Nothing in this powder could have altered it. **Raw blood taken from a live pig and given to a child by mouth is a route of infection, and the base of a pig's tail is not a clean site.** **The patient is a child, and the leaf gives no dose scaled to age or weight** — 5 pun of the powder is prescribed for an infant and for an older child alike. Alum by mouth is an astringent and, in quantity, an irritant and emetic; the quantity here is small, but it is being given to a child who may already be vomiting. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
