Translation

Treats damp heat leg qi, making the legs and knees painful, or with red swelling and hot pain arising between the bones of the foot. Even a single point of it can make walking hard and bring a person to wilting and lameness — a hundred uses, a hundred effects. Atractylodes soaked a day and night in rice water then salt-fried, and phellodendron soaked a day and night in wine then fried until scorched, 4 nyang each. Cut the above; take 5 don decocted in water, or bind with water into pills and take. Also called Changchul-san; made into pills, called Imyo-hwan. — Immun 入門 · Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two herbs, and one of the most-used pairs in all of East Asian medicine — the parent of Sammyo-hwan and Sasang-hwan and of every damp-heat formula for the lower body since. The whole art is in the processing: atractylodes soaked in rice water then fried with salt to send it down, phellodendron soaked in wine then scorched. The chapter's remark that a single point of this heat is enough to make someone lame is what justifies treating it aggressively. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
