Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

除胸中熱, 利膈上痰. (生)黃芩ㆍ(炒)黃芩 各一兩, 半夏(製)ㆍ黃連ㆍ澤瀉 各五錢, 南星(炮)ㆍ枳殼ㆍ陳皮 各〔三〕錢, 白朮 〔二〕錢, 白礬 一錢, 今加蘿葍子(炒) 五錢, 皂角 一錢. 右爲末, 蒸餠和丸梧子大, 白湯下五十丸. 《正傳》

Translation

Removes heat from the chest and frees phlegm above the diaphragm. Scutellaria, raw and stir-fried, 1 nyang each; pinellia (processed), coptis and alisma 5 don each; arisaema (blast-fried), bitter orange and tangerine peel 3 don each; white atractylodes 2 don; alum 1 don; with radish seed (stir-fried) 5 don and gleditsia pod 1 don now added. Powder them, make pills with steamed cake the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty down with plain hot water. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Damum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Scutellaria appears twice, once raw and once stir-fried, at equal weight. This is deliberate rather than redundant — raw scutellaria clears heat in the upper burner and the fried form turns the same medicinal toward the center without cooling as sharply, so the pair covers a heat that sits at the boundary. Alum and gleditsia pod at the small end of the formula are the phlegm-cutting agents, harsh and used sparingly.
