Clinical commentary 臨床

The short, workable version of the same idea as Bojesodok-eumja: the three bitter colds at parity with platycodon and licorice, and the four light-rising drugs at half that weight to take the action to the head. The difference is rhubarb, roasted in embers with wine so that it still moves the stool but less harshly, and it sits at the top of the list. Where the Dongwon prescription sips a powder at the swelling, this one opens a way out below. The name is from the Yijing hexagram 旣濟, After Completion — fire below water, the two in their right places. Whether that was meant as a statement about the drugs or simply as a good name for a prescription, the formula does put water over fire. It is a nine-drug decoction with nothing hazardous in it, which makes it one of the few leaves in this chapter that could be read as pharmacology rather than history. **Red swelling of the face and neck in a febrile patient still needs assessment for a bacterial infection.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
