Translation

Treats damp heat exuberant, with legs and knees strengthless and unable to bend or stretch, the lumbus and thighs sunken and heavy, and walking difficult. Stephania 1 nyang; notopterygium, bupleurum, talcum, wine-washed trichosanthes root, and roasted licorice, 5 don each; alisma and saposhnikovia, 3 don each; flavescent sophora and chuanwu aconite, 1 don each; cinnamon bark 5 fun. Powder the above and bind with a wine paste into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 70 pills with a decoction of scallion white and schizonepeta. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

An ounce of stephania at the head — the chapter's principal herb for draining water out of the legs — with talcum and alisma behind it, so the whole formula moves downward through the urine. The two fun of cinnamon and one don of aconite at the bottom are there for the same reason dried ginger appears in the cold formulas: a heavy cold prescription needs a small warm anchor or the stomach will not take it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
