Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

久服, 精滿氣盛, 髮白變黑, 齒落更生. 蒼朮十斤擣如泥, 入大鍋內, 用水二桶, 以文武火煮至十餘椀, 絹濾取汁, 入磁罐內, 以人參ㆍ生地黃ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ黃柏ㆍ遠志ㆍ杜沖ㆍ川芎ㆍ胡桃肉ㆍ川椒ㆍ破故紙ㆍ當歸ㆍ薑汁 各四兩, 靑鹽 二兩, 朱砂 一兩, 旱蓮草汁 二椀, 白蜜 二斤, 各藥爲末, 入朮膏內, 封固. 大鍋水煮, 官香二炷爲度, 取出埋土中七日. 每取二三匙, 空心, 酒湯任下, 日二次, 養精, 養氣, 養神. 《入門》

Translation

Taken long, the essence fills and the Qi becomes exuberant, white hair turns black, and fallen teeth grow again. Black atractylodes 10 geun pounded to a pulp, put into a large pot with two buckets of water and boiled over gentle then vigorous fire down to some ten bowls, strained through silk for the liquid, and put into a porcelain jar. Then ginseng, raw rehmannia, prepared rehmannia, phellodendron, polygala, eucommia, cnidium, walnut kernel, Sichuan pepper, psoralea, Korean angelica, and ginger juice 4 nyang each; blue salt 2 nyang; cinnabar 1 nyang; eclipta juice 2 bowls; and white honey 2 geun. Powder the medicinals, put them into the atractylodes paste, and seal it tightly. Boil in a large pot of water for the space of two sticks of official incense, then take it out and bury it in earth for seven days. Take two or three spoonfuls on an empty stomach, with wine or hot water as preferred, twice daily. It nourishes essence, nourishes Qi, and nourishes spirit. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Cinnabar is mercuric sulfide and must be omitted — it is neurotoxic and nephrotoxic with cumulative exposure, and this is a paste intended for daily long-term use, which is the worst possible exposure pattern. Without it the remaining sixteen make a substantial essence-supplementing paste on the atractylodes base. Two details of method are worth keeping: the timing measured in sticks of incense, which is a reproducible clock in a kitchen without one, and the seven days buried in earth, a cooling and settling step used across the paste preparations of this period. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
