Clinical commentary 臨床

痼冷 is cold that has become a fixture rather than an episode — the patient who is always cold, whose stool is always loose and who has long since stopped enjoying food — and this is the opening formula of the Bogam's short section on it. Ten aromatic warming drugs, no aconite, and the heaviest doses on cyperus, tangerine peel and tsaoko, which move qi rather than add heat. Nutmeg and evodia for the diarrhoea. Akebia at 3 fun is the odd one out, cool and draining, put in to stop a formula this warm from drying the patient out. Taken in warm wine or ginger decoction, either of which carries it downward. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
