Donguibogam

Translation

Treats soft nape. One large lump of limonite (calcined in fire and quenched in vinegar seven times) and a small amount of powdered curcuma tuber. Grind fine, add a small amount of musk, and form into rice-paste pills the size of euryale seeds. Take one pill each time, dissolved down in a schizonepeta decoction with two or three drops of ginger juice. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Gyeonghang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Named for the celestial pillar bone (天柱骨), the classical name for the cervical spine, whose "falling" is what this formula addresses. The sevenfold calcine-and-quench of limonite is a genuine processing sequence, converting the ore and rendering it friable enough to grind — the vinegar quench is what makes the mineral usable. Musk (麝香) is prohibited under CITES and cannot be dispensed; seokchangpo (石菖蒲) is the usual contemporary substitute for its orifice-opening action, though it does not reproduce the classical effect. Note that this is a pediatric formula for a developmental sign, and that the underlying causes named in the chapter text — chronic gan disorder, weakness with refusal of food, the aftermath of illness — point to nutrition and recovery as the real treatment. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
