Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-five medicinals in a formula whose largest dose is one don — Dongwon's method of covering every axis at once rather than choosing between them. Sappan, safflower, peach kernel and angelica tails give it a blood layer; the Oryeong-san group drains; coptis, scutellaria and evodia balance cold against hot; cimicifuga and bupleurum lift. Kelp appears in a quantity the source does not measure, 少許, and it is the one softening medicinal in the formula — present for masses rather than for the distension itself. The Accumulations chapter uses it the same way at 1.8.3. The entry that follows at 3.6.2 tells the practitioner when to reach for this one: take Gwangchul-gwoegyeon-tang until the central fullness is halved, and if there are accumulation lumps, then take this. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
