Translation

Another formula treats phlegm-rheum pain of the stomach duct. Calcined white snail shell, blast-fried arisaema, talc, parched gardenia, cyperus processed in a child's urine, and black atractylodes, 1 nyang each; bitter orange, green tangerine peel, costus, pinellia and amomum, 5 don each. Powder them all, steep steamed cake in ginger juice and make pills the size of mung beans; take fifty to seventy pills down with ginger decoction. In spring add cnidium, in summer coptis, in winter evodia. It is also called Baengnasagak-hwan. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Hyung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eleven drugs, and the seasonal additions at the end are the interesting part: the same formula is adjusted three ways through the year, warmed in winter and cooled in summer, with nothing added in autumn. 胃脘痛, pain of the stomach duct, is epigastric pain, and the chapter's own passage distinguishes it from true heart pain — a distinction worth more than the formula, since epigastric pain that is actually cardiac is the mistake that kills. Calcined snail shell is calcium carbonate and would have worked as an antacid. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
